Oh Dear…Yet Another ‘Star Wars’ Game – by the GrumpyGamer

imageStar Wars: The Force Unleashed (SWtFU) is the latest game to venture out of the LucasArts machine. Games based on Star Wars just as per Star Trek tend to be quite frankly….lousy.  Like many of the films, the games tend to have lacklustre stories or are out of context – a SW FPS…geez.

Personally I think the only Star Wars games I liked from LucasArts were the old DOS-based X-Wing series and Jedi Starfighter for the Xbox/Playstation.   The only truly exceptional SW game praised by  gamers, game critics and non-gaming award institutions such as BAFTAS, was not even made by LucasArts but imageby the Canadian MEGA developers – Bioware; the game of course was Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic for the Xbox and PC.  Bioware of course were responsible for such milestones such as Baulders Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Jade Empire and recently Mass Effect. Not only was SWKotOR an excellent game, the story, many critics revealed perhaps rivaled some of the films. The in-game plot twist rivalled that of SW The Empire Strikes Back.  Some even amusingly suggested that Bioware perhaps should have written some of the film scripts.

…Not only was SWKotOR an excellent game, the story, many critics revealed perhaps rivaled some of the films… SWtFU appears to be a God of War clone but set in the SW universe (no pun intended). I say appears because the game is not complete and not released, however I think I can still comment on what I have seen so far.  This is of course the combat – it is absolutely ridiculous and is not in context to what we are used to experiencing from the films.  For example, though Jedi may force jump, I’m fairly certain I have not seen them force-jump-then-hover-in-mid-air in any of the films.  Perhaps I am wrong.

In any event, the combat scenes do not look like SW combat sequences, in fact they more closely resemble the slightly out-of-context ninja-style combat as per the Spiderman films.  I have nothing against my Japanese friends or culture, in fact I just love anime especially the anime god Hayao Miyazaki.  But yes we are getting off topic.

Though the combat looks like ho-humm, lets hope they give it a good story and is not simply nothing more than one mission piled in after another with no continuity?
